What is Mediumship?
Mediumship can be defined as having the ability to communicate with spirit. Usually this will be someone who has passed over to the other side who you have a connection with - or who is maybe connected with someone close to you - although Spirit contact can take many forms, including Spirit Guides and Angels.
A Medium is someone who can receive communication from the spirit world and then pass it on to a third party, typically someone who is being given a reading.
Communication with the spirit world can take many forms and this can include receiving information visually (clairvoyance), audibly (clairaudience) or by feeling and knowing (clairsentience/claircognizant), or a combination of these things. It is also possible to sense spirit presence by taste (clairgustance) and smell (clairscentrient or clairalience).
Most working mediums will use a combination of these abilities when linking with spirit although they may be more developed in any of these particular areas.
Mental Mediumship
Although there are mediums who have the ability to see, hear etc. spirit as solid and audible as you or I, the vast majority of mediums receive spirit communication within their mind. This is known as 'mental mediumship'. When spirit place the information they want to communicate into the mediums mind it may feel almost like a thought and the medium may receive the information as pictures, words, sounds etc.
If you have ever attended a public performance of mediumship, or seen it on TV, and considered that you may not have the ability to work as a medium in some capacity because you can't see or hear what the medium is experiencing then this is not necessarily the case. It may simply be that you are capable of performing mediumship within the mind so do not let that prevent you from exploring this area further.
To get a feel for what this is like for the medium try imagining a loved one - seeing what they look like, hearing the sound of their voice, smelling their perfume or aftershave, holding their hand. Maybe try imagining a favourite place, how it looks or smells, any sounds that you remember there. That is what mental mediumship feels like.
If you tried that brief exercise then it is likely that some of those experiences were clear, or easy to imagine. Maybe others were harder to achieve. That is because you are likely to be more developed in some areas than others.
